Although advanced renaming of multiple files is best done through the command line or by use of a bulk renaming utility, this quick tip renames multiple files and folders to have numerically incremental series of names in a matter of seconds.

Renaming multiple files:

  1. Select all the files that you want to rename.
  2. Right click, choose Rename (or press F2). Select files
    Right click, rename
  3. Type the new name for the files.
    Type name
  4. Press Enter.
  5. All files will get renamed in an incremental numerical order.

In Windows 7, there will be separate series of names for different file types as in the screenshot above. The JPEG files get renamed in a series starting from (1), and so do the PNG files.

The trick works while renaming multiple folders as well.
